Auditions
Do I perform
well enough to receive a scholarship from The
Scarlet Band?
We make every
effort to accept as many students as possible for
the Scarlet Band. There are about 90 -120
scholarships given in a year.
ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE?
YES! Band members are eligible to receive a
scholarship ranging from $300 to $750 a semester.
How do I get
complete audition information?
Complete
audition information is provided upon request. You
may request audition information by (1) mailing in a
scholarship application provided on this web site,
(2) calling the UWA Band Office at (205) 652-3598,
or (3) by emailing the director of bands.
What is the
deadline to register for an audition?
Audition
deadlines vary from year to year. Band students can
be accepted up until school starts in the fall and
spring.
HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER
OF THE SCARLET BAND?
Prospective
members must complete an audition prior to the start
of school. Auditions consist of five scales or
rudiments (student’s choice), prepared material that
demonstrates tone and technique, and sight-reading.
Percussionists may elect to audition on snare, bass
drum, tenors, and keyboard instruments.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES BAND REQUIRE?
The marching band rehearses only 11/2 hours a day;
four days a week. There is an after class practice
on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the fall that
normally lasts from 7:30 pm until 9:00 pm.
Do band students receive academic credit?
YES.
One credit hour per
semester.
Will the
Scarlet Band interfere with my school work?
Rehearsals are
scheduled at a time of day when few other classes
meet and little class time is lost due to travel.
With careful planning when scheduling classes, labs
and work there should be plenty of time to
participate in the band, school and have a time to
attend social events.
As with any
college activity, you will be responsible for
keeping track of your time and keeping up with all
of your academic work.
