Auditions
Do I perform well enough to receive a
scholarship from UWA?
We make
every effort to accept as many students as possible
for the Scarlet Band. There are about 90 -120
scholarships given in a year.
ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIPS
AVAILABLE?
YES!
Band members are eligible to receive a scholarship
ranging from $300 to $750 a semester.
How do I get
complete audition information?
Complete audition information is
provided upon request. You may request audition
information by (1) mailing in a scholarship
application provided on this web site, (2) calling
the UWA Band Office at (205) 652-3598, or (3) by

What is the deadline to register for
an audition?
Audition deadlines vary from year to
year. Band students can be accepted up until school
starts in the fall and spring.
HOW DO I
BECOME A MEMBER OF THE SCARLET BAND?
Prospective members must complete an audition prior
to the start of school. Auditions consist of five
scales or rudiments (student’s choice), prepared
material that demonstrates tone and technique, and
sight-reading. Percussionists may elect to audition
on snare, bass drum, tenors, and keyboard
instruments.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES BAND
REQUIRE?
The marching band rehearses only one and a half
hours a day; four days a week. There is an
after class practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays
during the fall that normally lasts from 7:30 pm
until 9:00 pm.
Do band students receive academic
credit?
YES. One credit hour per
semester.
Will the Scarlet Band interfere with
my school work?
Rehearsals are scheduled at a time of
day when few other classes meet and little class
time is lost due to travel. With careful planning
when scheduling classes, labs and work there should
be plenty of time to participate in the band,
school and have a time to attend social events.
As with any college activity, you
will be responsible for keeping track of your time
and keeping up with all of your academic work. Plan ahead, you can do it!
Are you interested in becoming a
Band Helper?
What does that involve?
You will assist in organizing and passing out music.
Assisting with passing out uniforms, hats and
plumes. Carry props and flags for the dance line and
color guard. You will work with the Band Director
and Band Council sponsor with small tasks during
band camp, rehearsals and band trips.
You get to attend all home games.
You get to travel to all full-band away trips
(mainly Mardi Gras in Mobile, Al).
Are there any conditioning requirements?
Yes. You should be able to perform the
assigned duties from the director and staff; which
take place during band camp, rehearsals, game-day,
and trips, which sometimes means carrying heavy
equipment or a good deal of physical exertion in hot
and humid or very cold conditions.
Do I need to attend marching band rehearsal
each day and when does that take place? Yes you do
need to attend band camp and marching band rehearsals.
Those take place from 3:30 p.m. -
5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and after class
practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30p.m. -
9:00p.m.
